For information only. Interest is simple, for every day of delay including the first and last day of each period, on a 365 or 366 day year. A payment goes first to interest, then to principal, oldest first. Contractual interest, costs of proceedings and special rules are not covered.
How Serbian default interest works
A debtor who pays late owes statutory default interest under the Serbian Law on Default Interest, in force since 25 December 2012. It applies unless the contract validly sets a different rate.
For a debt in dinars the rate is the reference rate of the National Bank of Serbia plus eight percentage points. For a debt in euros the base is the European Central Bank rate on main refinancing operations, also plus eight percentage points. A new rate applies from the day after it is published by the National Bank of Serbia.
Interest is simple, never compound, and runs for every calendar day of delay. When the rate or the amount changes, a new period starts, and the total is the sum of the periods.
- formula: interest = principal × rate × days / (100 × days in the year)
- a year has 365 days, a leap year 366
- a debt in euros payable in dinars carries the euro rate
Questions creditors ask
From which day does interest run?
From the day the debtor is in default, usually the day after the invoice falls due, or the day set in the contract or the judgment. Enter that date in the calculator.
Is there interest on interest?
No. The law prescribes the simple method, so interest is calculated on the principal only.
How is a partial payment applied?
A payment goes first to costs, then to interest, then to principal, unless the parties agreed otherwise. The calculator applies it first to interest, then to principal.
Can I claim this interest in Serbia without a lawsuit?
Often yes. With an invoice and an extract from your books, a company can ask a Serbian court or enforcement officer for enforcement directly, and the interest is claimed in the same request. Our guide on collecting debts from Serbian companies explains the steps.
